MY APPROACH

I’m writing this while sitting on campus at U of Alabama, Tuscaloosa working with graduates and undergraduates.… looking at these young adults as THEY are realizing the time has arrived to figure out who and what they are going to do & be in this world……

Finding your expression is the single most important job you have… how to express your unique gift that is unlike anyone else’s…. the arts and the truth they demand accomplish this…..

The value of a master class is introducing students to a pathway to their expression. It really doesn’t matter that they end up singing, let alone landing a Broadway show…. it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. The journey to your self. The goal of my master class is getting my class to take the first step and feeling the power of their unique expression.

What i do is work through the body…. it bypasses the critical mind which is the #1 KILLER OF CREATIVITY AND EXPRESSION. The body doesn’t lie and it holds the key to unlocking all the clever self-deceptions the mind creates.

What I do?….. First, I gently teach relaxation and breathing and we clear the day…. go a little deeper and you clear fear, anger, doubt, pride…. any number of frailties that block your authentic ‘voice’. Once the student is less self-conscious and more grounded, more in their body, they have a chance to ‘connect’ to a lyric, the song and their feelings, we then work on the song from there. Ask any true artist ……Connection is key, the magic…the joy in whatever path you find yourself in life. All of this is accomplished in an atmosphere of compassion and care… the inner critic has done enough damage and it’s not my intention to empower it any further.

My ideas are based on Stanislavsky’s simple but profound ideas of Relaxation, Concentration & Imagination….. achieve one state and it delivers the next….and so much more…..
